This is a novel in the Marrow sequence, and actually begins with the Great Ship sort of talking about itself, and how it came to be.
However, during this novel there are far greater concerns for the inhabitants and captains, as it appears that someone would like to do bad things to the Great Ship. Not too easy with such a massive, hyperfiber armored object. Requires some rather exotic weaponry, and a desperate defense.
More weird and wild aliens and weaponry are to be found here. Certainly the best of Reed's novels I've come across.
