A Million Open Doors - John Barnes
Somewhat tedious.
Interstellar colonies are possible due to Springer travel technology, and one young man goes back to one of these - coming from a place rather obsessed with the arts. Which, if you don't have much patience for lengthy discussions of this sort of thing will get dull very quickly.
It gets more interesting later, as where he travels to is not so airy fairy, and rather more repressive - meaning conflict.
Although if the couple of pages at the end of the book was the story, this would be a lot better.
