The Dark Descent - David G. Hartwell

A monster horror retrospective. In hardback, you could institute this in your weight training, clocking in at the four figure page count.

Hartwell says that the anthology grew of out three years of discussions with Kathryn Cramer and Peter Pautz.

The book is divided into three sections, and actually has been published as such.

1. The Color of Evil
2. The Medusa In the Shield
3. A Fabulous Formless Darkness

In a lengthy introduction Hartwell categorises three types of horror, broadly, as moral allegorical, psychological metaphor, and the fantastic. This part of the book also points out that horror was mostly done at short length, until the advent reasonably recently of King and company. Further, he suggest actual horror fans don't like the third sort as much as there is rarely any terror.
