Modern Classics Of Fantasy - Gardner Dozois
An extensive tome, closing on the 700 page mark, so fine value. A good anthology, too, for fantasy, averaging 3.52.
There is a fairly extensive, useful introduction where the editor goes over the history of the fantasy story and fantasy publishing, partially seen through the lens of his own reading in his younger days - mentioning for instance that it was a fantasy magazine that he looked forward to the most, and anything in cheap paperback as hardbacks were out of range. That there was pre-Tolkien fantasy reader interest, etc. So, pretty good work.
There's also a shortish selection at the end of some other work to look for, if interested.
As with the Modern Classics of Science Fiction here, Dozois wants to reprint some of the not so commonly found stories, along with the others, and some of his favorites - allowing that to influence his selecting.
Definitely a good book to get.
